"Huzzah! her sides are made of iron!" was an exclamation one sailor made as he noticed cannon balls bouncing off of USS Constitution during her famous War of 1812 battle against the HMS Guerriere.
But what's this "Huzzah!" stuff all about?
The word "Huzzah" dates back to the time of Shakespeare. According to writers in the 17th and 18th centuries, it was a sailor's cheer or salute. "Huzzah" was derived from the shouts seamen make when friends come aboard or go off. It was an exclamation of joy.
